The media reports that drugs containing Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine, which are used in the treatment of malaria and some severe diseases, are effective in preventing Covid-19 and in the treatment of the disease, led citizens to rush these drugs.

Vice-rector of Yeditepe University and Head of Toxicology Department at Faculty of Pharmacy, Prof. Ahmet Aydın warns that drugs containing Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine used to treat malaria and some severe diseases are recommended for protection from Covid-19:

“There is currently no scientific data on taking these drugs in advance to avoid Covid-19 disease. Those who expressed this situation pose a great danger for the health of our people in the difficult period we are in.”

Prof. Aydın said “Medicines should only be used when needed, and by professionals such as physicians and pharmacists, by calculating the risk-benefit ratio. When these principles are followed, they ensure the protection of human health, and when these principles are not followed, they cause undesirable effects.”
